Neil Krebs Award 2015
Neil Krebs was a student who played on the
freshman boys volleyball team at Spring Valley School here in the St James-Assiniboia
School Division. This award was developed as a memorial to Neil who died as a
result of an automobile/cycling accident. This award is given annually to a
player who best exemplifies the characteristics that Neil displayed as an
athlete -excellent skill, sportsmanship and team commitment. The Neil Krebs
award is given annually to a member of the Tier 1 Championship Team. It is given to
a male volleyball player one year and a female the next.
This year our worthy recipient is: Kiara Kerwin pictured here with Kenneth and Donna Krebs - Neil's parents.

SJAMYAA Tier 1 Volleyball Winners
Big thanks to all the teams, coaches, referees, scorekeepers and volunteers that made the St. James- Assiniboia Volleyball Championships a success this past weekend. Special Congratulations to both the Boys and Girls Tier 1 Volleyball teams from Bruce Middle School who captured the SJAEYAA Championship this past weekend.

MPETA Award Winners.
Two of Westwood Collegiates finest teachers were honoured on October 22 2015 at the Annual Manitoba Physical Education Teachers Association (MPETA) Awards night. Mr. Schmeichel received the the Stu Sieme Award. This award is presented to a school with an exemplary outdoor
education program. Mr Sdrolias won the Innovator Award for his creative and cutting edge approach to fitness through teaching. Congratulations.

PD: Kids in the Know Program
Personal Safety
Title: Kids in the Know (Grade K - 6)
Description: Kids in the Know is the Divisionally approved personal safety curriculum. Kids in the Know directly supports instruction of the Personal Safety outcomes of the Health Education curriculum. Kids in the Know is an interactive safety curriculum for children and youth. The purpose of the curriculum is to reduce child/youth victimization by teaching children/youth effective personal safety strategies. Lessons on child personal safety and sexual exploitation provide children and youth with tools to help them responds to dangerous and threatening situations. The program promotes self-esteem, teaches assertiveness as well as critical thinking skills to reduce children’s/youth’s chances of becoming victimized. Kids in the Know is a sequential program of instruction which allows lessons to evolve at increasing level of complexity and comprehension (5-7 lessons per grade).
Who should attend? All new K, 1, 3 ,5, 6 classroom teachers, Counselors and Student Services personnel who have not yet attended the Kids in the Know workshop.

Community Places Program
What is the Community Places Program?
The Community Places Program (CPP) provides funding and planning assistance to non-profit community organizations for facility construction, upgrading, expansion or acquisition projects. Eligible projects are those which provide sustainable recreation and wellness benefits to communities.
Applications to Manitoba Housing & Community Development’s Community Places Program are now available.
The Community Places Program (CPP) provides funding and planning assistance to non-profit community organizations for facility construction, upgrading, expansion or acquisition projects. Eligible projects are those which provide sustainable recreation and wellness benefits to communities.
Applications are available in September and the deadline for submitting applications for the Community Places Program is December 15.

Non-profit community organizations can apply to the Program for up to 50% of the first $15,000 of project costs and up to 1/3 of project costs over that amount. The maximum grant is $50,000.
