Evan Cox Payworks HS Coach of the Month


PAYWORKS HIGH SCHOOL COACHES OF THE MONTH

Evan Cox of Sturgeon Heights Collegiate has been selected as Paywork High School Coach of the Month for March. 

This past March, Evan coached the Huskies to the Junior Varsity AAAA Provincial Basketball Championship.  Evan has been the head coach of the JV program for the past 7 years.  During this time he has also offered assistance to the varsity boys and varsity girls basketball teams.  As a testament to his dedication for school sports, and students, Evan was balancing the badminton tryouts during his team's Provincial Championship run.  Evan has shown a strong commitment to his own personal coaching development attending numerous clinics and conferences.

MPETA FARSIDE WORKSHOP 2016 

Living Mino-Pimatisiwin (The Good Life) through Health and Physical Education


The Manitoba Physical Education Teachers Association (MPETA) is excited to host the annual 2016 MPETA- Farside Workshop on Friday April 29, 2016 at the University of Manitoba. 
The theme for the conference will be Living Mino-Pimatisiwin (The Good Life) through Health and Physical Education.
Lunch is provided.
$50 for MPETA members.

Sessions

 Jigging Presenter: Dean Davis

 Its about learning to jig Métis style, dancing in harmony with the music. We will learn the basic step which can be used to dance at any event with the fiddle present. We will also learn to jig to the Red River Jig which requires the basic steps and many fancy steps.

Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreation CouncilPresenter: Melvin Magpantay, Edward Albert and Lynette Kryminski

Topics include: Challenges youth face in participation, services MASRC provides, and the North American Indigenous Games.

Exploring Hoop Dance Presenter: Brandy McKay

Following the “make an take” activity of making your own hoops, teachers will be taught to explore hoop dance using their own set of hoops and learn some basic hoop dance moves and skills. Land-Based Teaching for Children Presenter: Barb Carlson and Jennifer Davis In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to a variety of outdoor, land-based activities designed for children that convey Indigenous approaches to learning using the natural world as the classroom.

 Building Hoops to Build Community Presenter: Brandy McKay

Teachers will be guided through step-by-step instructions on how to build a set of hoops and be given the opportunity to build their own set as a “make and take” project.

Divsional Staff Volleyball Tournament


The annual divisional staff volleyball tournament began in the 2002-2003 school year. It ended for reasons unknown in 2009-2010. At the request of staff it returned on Thursday February 4th 2016 at John Taylor Collegiate.

Nutrition Education Workshops









All sessions are free of charge and each attendee gets one free teaching package.

K-3 Teachers - Power to Play - January 22nd, full day
Power to Play is a superhero themed program that encourages healthy eating and physical activity for children.  

Grade 4 & 5 Teachers - Power to Explore - February 12th, full day            Powers to Explore and Healthy Food, Healthy Bodies help students develop skills to make healthy food and drink choices. They are designed to help students establish positive, life-long practices in healthy eating. 

Grade 6 Teachers - Powerful Bones - January 18 or 19, morning only  
Powerful Bones helps students understand that bones are made of living tissue and that adolescence is the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build strong bones.

Grade 8 Teachers - Power to Be - February 19th - morning only  
Power to Be explores the complex and interrelated issues of body image, eating, nutrition, fitness, body weight, shape and size in a manner relevant to younger teens.

Neil Krebs Award 2015

Neil Krebs was a student who played on the freshman boys volleyball team at Spring Valley School here in the St James-Assiniboia School Division. This award was developed as a memorial to Neil who died as a result of an automobile/cycling accident. This award is given annually to a player who best exemplifies the characteristics that Neil displayed as an athlete -excellent skill, sportsmanship and team commitment. The Neil Krebs award is given annually to a member of the Tier 1 Championship Team. It is given to a male volleyball player one year and a female the next. 

This year our worthy recipient is: Kiara Kerwin pictured here with Kenneth and Donna Krebs - Neil's parents.
