Science and the Olympics!!!

When you're watching the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics next month, will STEM topics come to mind? The educational arm of NBC News certainly hopes so.
With the Winter Olympics rapidly approaching, NBC Learn, in partnership with the National Science Foundation and NBC Olympics (a division of NBC Sports Group), just launched a free online video series called "Science and Engineering of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games." The videos, available to the public for free online, tackle subjects such as stability and vibration in alpine skiing, engineering the half pipe, the science of snow and ice, and, as seen below, the physics of slopestyle skiing.

Rock Paper Scissors...Bluntly it is on the Cutting Edge for Charity!
The Annual Rock Paper Scissors contest at L'Ecole Sturgeon Heights was a huge success with schools from all across the division taking part. It is a regular feature at the annual Pros vs Joes organized by Deb Einarson-Woods. All proceeds go to Project Echo and in particular Sam's Christmas, a Winnipeg Charity. Congratulations to all and a special thanks to Ms. Deb Einarson-Woods
and Sturgeon Heights for all the work to make the Annual Rock Paper
Scissors contest a success. The event was spectacular with Winnipeg Blue Bomber
team members, Jim Rondeau and Goldie among others. The top 3 had a student from
Sturgeon Heights Heritage and Phoenix with Heritage the champions.

National Jersey Day is a hit!
The first annual National Jersey Day was a huge success with 17 schools participating. Lakewood Bruce Brooklands and Athlone all recorded 100% participation. There was a little controversy as unfortunately we had to go to a tiebreaking procedure for the full autographed Winnipeg Jets jersey. Brooklands school took home the prize. Congratulations and thanks again to all!
