June 7 2014 National Health and Fitness Day!

Free Access to City’s Aquatic & Recreation Facilities for National Health & Fitness Day

Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Sam Katz today announced that the City of Winnipeg will participate in National Health and Fitness Day on Saturday, June 7th, 2014, supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

For the entire day, City of Winnipeg fitness facilities and indoor pools will provide access, at no charge, during normal public use times.

“The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba works tirelessly to provide families with the knowledge and resources to pursue healthy lives free of heart disease and stroke,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I encourage all Winnipeggers to enjoy use of our facilities on National Health and Fitness Day, and help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke through physical activity every day.”
National Health and Fitness Day is about involving local governments in increasing the physical activity of their communities in response to declining rates of physical activity and increasing rates of heart disease and obesity. It acts as a national platform to shine a light on these issues in Canada and calls upon municipalities across the country to proclaim the day and invites them to mark it by making their recreational facilities less expensive or complimentary.
“We are pleased that the City of Winnipeg is participating in National Health and Fitness Day,” said Debbie Brown, CEO, Heart and Stroke Foundation in Manitoba. “It is important to include physical activity in your life to help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. It can help to maintain a healthy body weight, reduce stress, control your cholesterol and blood pressure levels.”
Winnipeg joins communities across Canada participating in National Health and Fitness Day encouraging people to use civic recreational facilities and get physically active.
